WATCH: Schoolhouse Rock’s “I’m Just A Bill” Updated for Gun Debate to “I’m Just a Prayer”

Read

Remember the old “I’m Just a Bill” video that taught kids how a bill becomes a law? Well, with all the talk about addressing gun violence through sending prayers, we thought we’d update this American classic.

Sing the following words to the tune of the original version!

Boy (speaking):

Woof! You sure gotta climb a lot of stairs to get to this Capitol Building here in Washington. But I wonder who that ineffective little request for help is?

Prayer (singing):

I’m just a prayer
Yes I’m only a prayer
And some folks have sent me up in the air
Well it’s a big big hassle to just pass legislation
So we sit quietly in prayer and speculation
But I know that I will work someday
That’s if enough people pray, unaware
That the gunmen don’t care, about prayer

Boy (speaking):

Gee, Prayer, with 352 mass shootings in the U.S. this year alone you certainly have a lot of patience.

Prayer (speaking):

When I started, I wasn’t even a prayer, just reflection, son. Most folks want a safer country to live in, so they offer up their thoughts and prayers to victims of this nonsense but it’s obvious at this point now I ain’t workin’. I’m just good intentions and well-wishin’ until they decide to make me into sensible gun laws.

(singing)

I’m just a prayer
I’m still only a prayer
And eventually I will work, I swear
Well as far as helpin’ I think this one’s been proven
To be the best method if you aren’t into movin’
A lot of folks reflect and pray
But the NRA, doesn’t care
That’s why no hope is there, for your prayer

Boy (speaking): Listen to those gun lobbyists and gun control advocates arguing! Why don’t they all just pray for these shootings to stop?

Prayer: That isn’t going to work. It isn’t working. Our prayers didn’t work last time. Or the time before that. Or the time before that.

Boy: Oh.

Prayer: Yeah.

Boy: What about thoughts? Did our thoughts work?

Prayer: No.

Boy: I see.

Prayer: Because…

(singing)

I’m just a prayer
And it simply ain’t fair
To the families of victims out there
For us to sit and do nothin’, the least of which that is
Posting “thoughts and prayers” on our Facebook status
The one conclusion we can draw
Is that we need a new law, not just stare
At our phones and just share, thoughts and prayers
